The public parking garage located at 300 Church Street in Downtown Oakville will be closed for repairs that could begin as early as spring 2023 and take about 12 months to complete.
The repairs will help address structural issues and deterioration identified during routine maintenance inspections and testing in 2022. Based on the expert advice of external engineering consultants, maintenance work and repairs must be carried out to keep the garage in good shape.
The garage is safe to use and remains open to the public until spring 2023. Some areas within the garage may be blocked off because of the testing done in the spring/summer 2022, but there is ample parking space at this location, including at the rooftop.
A structural engineer will regularly monitor the garage until the rehabilitation begins next year.
Next steps
Staff have put forth budget requests to hire a consultant to provide the in-depth rehabilitation plans and a contractor to complete the repairs.
Along with detailed plans, the consultant will advise town staff on the specific start and duration of the garage closure.
Minimizing the impact to parking garage users
This is a priority for the town, and plans will be in place to limit the impacts of the closure. These plans include:
- Alternate parking arrangements for garage permit holders, businesses in the area and visitors to the downtown.
- This includes additional parking spaces being offered at various locations in the downtown core and at Oakville Trafalgar Community Centre.
- We are reviewing options to provide temporary paid parking spaces for visitors to Downtown Oakville. Opportunities to create new parking locations to assist in offsetting the spaces lost from the closure of the parking garage will also be reviewed.
- Best management practices to address site maintenance, dust, noise, and traffic during the construction.
Our real-time parking online map is a great tool for residents and visitors to use now and throughout the rehabilitation.
Protecting the parking supply downtown
We are going to focus on making Downtown Oakville more attractive by offering more opportunities for everyone to enjoy.
As part of this commitment, staff have started a budget request to develop a Downtown Parking Supply Strategy (DPSS) in 2023 which will build on recommendations brought forward in the Parking Management Strategy.
- The Parking Management Strategy focuses broadly on optimizing within the existing parking model.
- The DPSS will focus on Downtown Oakville and how best to determine the current and future needs.
