Policy statement

The Oakville Fire Department is committed to the responsible delivery of Fire Protection Services and Emergency Management Planning within the Town of Oakville, in accordance with the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, 1997, the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act and all applicable municipal by-laws and corporate policies and procedures.

Purpose

The Town of Oakville is required through the Fire Protection and Prevention Act, 1997 to establish programming which must include public education with respect to fire safety and fire prevention; and other fire services as determined necessary. The Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act requires the Town of Oakville to develop and implement emergency management programs to manage an appropriate response to any emergency situation or impending situation.

Scope

The fire department provides public education, fire inspection and enforcement, and emergency response through a range of services to protect the lives, property and environment of the residents of Oakville. These services include, but are not limited to:

  • public education;
  • public fire and life safety messaging;
  • simplified risk assessment;
  • inspection services
  • annual evacuation drills;
  • plans review;
  • fire investigation;
  • emergency response to fires, medical and other non-medical responses; and
  • specialize emergency responses.

The fire department also provides services under emergency management programming which include but is not limited to development of emergency management plans, training, exercises, public education and business continuity planning.

Definitions

Specialized emergency responses: hazardous materials mitigation and rescue, water/ice rescue, high/low angle rescue, confined space rescue, auto extrication and tiered medical responses.
