With summer in full swing, the Town of Oakville is reminding residents to be safe around swimming pools, lakes, rivers and other bodies of water. Enjoy water safely by learning how to swim, swimming with a friend, wearing a lifejacket, ensuring children are supervised around water and being responsible by not engaging in risky behaviour.
“We all play a role in keeping our community safe and healthy for all residents to enjoy,” said Mayor Rob Burton. “Let’s ensure we all have a good summer by continuing to follow rules and public health measures and practicing extra caution when around bodies of water.”
The town has put up signs at bridges to remind residents of the extreme dangers of diving or jumping into rivers, creeks and lakes. Diving or jumping off bridges is also prohibited under Oakville by-laws.
“In many parts of Oakville’s rivers and creeks, the water is extremely shallow and there is a serious concern for risk of injury that could result in paralysis or even death,” said Oakville Fire Chief Paul Boissonneault. “Please don’t take any risks and be safe and responsible around our waterways.”

The town offers a number of programs to support safe swimming, including learn to swim opportunities. In the coming days, residents will also be able to borrow a life jacket through the Oakville Public Library at the Glen Abbey and Iroquois Ridge locations.
On hot and sunny days during the summer, keep cool and enjoy the water safely by visiting one of our outdoor pools or a Halton beach.
