The Town of Oakville is actively assisting Halton Region in the rollout plans of the COVID-19 vaccine. The town is ready to provide even higher levels of support if the Region needs it to achieve a successful program in support of the province’s prioritized rollout across Ontario. In Ontario, the provision of COVID-19 vaccinations is a coordinated effort between the Federal Government, the Province of Ontario, local public health units and hospitals.
“The Town of Oakville is ready to provide civic facilities and staffing for the rollout of vaccination for the general public, if needed in the future when the province’s plan allows,” said Mayor Rob Burton. “Our efforts will be coordinated with Halton Region Public Health and the federal and provincial governments, which are responsible for procuring the vaccine and eligibility criteria. Our combined efforts will make the rollout possible and we look forward to assisting as required.”
In Canada, the Federal Government is responsible for approving, acquiring and distributing vaccines to the provinces and territories. The Provincial Government determines where the doses will go, who will receive it and when. In December, the Government of Ontario established a three-phase implementation plan to receive, store and distribute COVID-19 vaccines across the province.
“There’s no doubt that a COVID-19 vaccine is encouraging and planning is underway at the Region of Halton to ensure that, with adequate supply delivered from the Federal Government, and after the vaccination of priority populations, everyone in Halton who wants the vaccine can receive it,” added Mayor Burton. “In the meantime, residents are encouraged to continue to follow all public health advice to only leave home for essentials, wash and sanitize hands frequently, cover coughs and sneezes, maintain a physical distance from anyone outside your household and wear a mask when you can’t, even outdoors, and where mandated.”
