Plant native trees or flowers, visit public art installations and reflect for Canada Day in Oakville

The Town of Oakville invites residents to recognize Canada Day a little differently this year. The town is offering activities for residents to enjoy safely and encouraging personal reflection on what it means to be Canadian.

“Canada Day has presented us with the opportunity to acknowledge the work that must go into the diverse and equitable community we strive for. That begins with reflecting on the past, the treaty lands on which we live remind us that Oakville was settled by Indigenous, white and Black settlers who worked together to build a community of harmony and prosperity. We value our on-going relationship with the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation,” said Mayor Rob Burton. “However you choose to recognize Canada Day, I encourage residents to take a moment to reflect on how we can strengthen what unites us and how each of us can work towards creating a community where everyone feels respected and welcomed.”

Leading up to our nation’s birthday, Oakville residents are invited to take part in the following activities:

Back for another year, Oakville residents are invited to pick up a native tree, plant or flower and plant it on their property on Canada Day. To make it safe and easy for residents to participate, the native tree and flower giveaway will be a drive-thru event at one of two locations, while supplies last:

Special giveaways will be offered during the tree, plant and flower pick-up times.

Public art plays an important role in building community, promoting dialogue and fostering a sense of belonging. From July 1 and throughout summer, residents are invited to engage, explore and be inspired by Oakville’s temporary public art project “ConNextions” at the following local neighbourhood parks:

The experience offers unique art installations on display by local emerging and professional artists with strong connections to Oakville.

Please remember to follow Provincial regulations and public health guidelines, such as keeping a two-metre distance from others, and wearing a mask when physical distancing is a challenge. If a park is busy, consider returning at a different time or visiting a different location.
