Council approves name for Oakville’s new community centre

At Monday’s meeting, Town Council officially named the new community centre currently under construction in south east Oakville, the Oakville Trafalgar Community Centre. The centre has temporarily been referred to as the Southeast Community Centre during construction.

The community centre, and adjoining park, resides on the site of the former Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital which served the community for over 65 years until December 2015, when it moved to its new location in North Oakville.

“Adopting the Oakville Trafalgar name recognizes the important legacy of the former hospital that touched so many residents’ lives and played a significant role in this community,” Mayor Rob Burton said. “Town Council is excited to build this new community hub that will bring people together and help residents live active, engaged and healthy lifestyles for years to come.”

Consultation meetings occurred with the Mayor and Ward 3 Councillors, David Gittings and Janet Haslett-Theall to consider naming options.

“In discussion with area residents and Residents Associations, the consensus was that the name Oakville Trafalgar honours the memory of the former Oakville Trafalgar Hospital, the history of the area and its position adjacent to the Trafalgar Road Heritage Conservation District,” said Councillor David Gittings.

The new community centre is scheduled to open in fall 2020, and will have a modern building design that respects the adjacent heritage district as well as the heritage-designated Oakville Trafalgar high school building. It will include a 25-metre lap pool, a warm water pool, a double gymnasium, a fitness centre with a running track, multipurpose meeting rooms and space for intergenerational programming. Adjacent to the community centre, there will be a 0.6 hectare neighbourhood park that will include soft landscaping and trees, seating, a play structure, lawn areas, a water play area, pavilion and bicycle parking.
