Rules for school crossings
Drivers and cyclists must stop and yield the whole roadway at school crossings where there is a crossing guard displaying a school crossing stop sign.
For more information, visit the Ministry of Transportation website.
Tips for motorists
- Crossing guards wear a bright orange vest, bright orange wristbands, and they hold a stop sign in an upright position when taking kids across the street.
- All motorists must stop before reaching a crosswalk when the stop sign is upright. Motorists must stop when the crossing guard and the children are preparing to cross or are in the roadway.
- Motorists should not proceed through the crosswalk until the children and the crossing guard have cleared the roadway.
- Be courteous and attentive if you encounter a crossing guard. Obey the crossing guard at all school crossings. Obey speed limits and community safety zones at all times.
Inclement weather
There may be times during the school year when extreme temperatures or weather conditions impact crossing guard locations in Oakville. Details are outlined on the Crossing Guard Weather Procedure page.
