We manage stormwater to decrease the risk of flooding and to reduce pollution. Stormwater management protects Oakville residents while preserving the natural environment.

In Southern Ontario, we are experiencing more rainfall than ever. Luckily, Oakville has had a stormwater system in place for over fifty years that we continue to improve.

Understanding stormwater management

Stormwater is rain and melting snow that flows over land. This water makes its way to Lake Ontario through our stormwater drainage system and private property.

The minor drainage system includes catch basins (storm drains), sewers, ditches, and driveway culverts. This system can usually handle common storms.

The major drainage system handles stormwater flows that are too large for the minor system. The major system includes roads, diversion channels, and natural waterways. Major drainage systems are meant to handle uncommonly large storms.
